Over 10 years of games in the name of ancient military exercises: test your Gallic spirit with our tossing the caber, putting the stone, and tug o’ war competitions.

To travel: The word was imported from overseas – travail … labor … exhausting work. Those who travel should be prepared with both mind and body. The ancient Celts, used to moving frequently, are preparing to have fun.

Once again this year at Montelago, the traditional games are back to test your strength and athleticism. Leave your baggage behind, and try your hand at:

Tossing the caber… to break down the wall of shields

Regulations: The object of the game is to throw a log approx. 2,2m long and weighing approximately 25kg (1,8m x 8kg for women) as far as possible. Launching techniques are a personal choice but we recommend grabbing the base of the trunk with both hands and supporting the trunk on one of your shoulders before taking a running start to launch it. The trunk must fall within the designated field of competition, and the length of the toss will be measured from that part of the log closest to the launching zone. Overrunning or stepping on the line delineating the boundary of the launching zone will result in an invalid or “foul” toss.

Putting the stone… to crack the skulls of your enemies!

Regulations: The object of the game is to toss a stone weighing approx. 15kg (7,5kg for women) as far as possible. Launching techniques are a personal choice but we recommend turning your back towards the throwing area, grasping the stone with both hands, swinging the stone back and forth between the legs, and finally launching the stone back past the side of your head (i.e. over one of your shoulders). The stone must fall within the designated field of competition, and once it has stopped, the length of the toss will be measured from that part of the stone closest to the launching zone. Overrunning or stepping on the line delineating the boundary of the launching zone will result in an invalid or “foul” toss.

Tug o’ war,* to uproot the palisades of the fort!

Regulations: The format followed is classic tug o’ war in which two teams of 5 members are positioned on opposite sides of a rope, and pull the rope in order to get the opposing team to cross a predefined line in the centre of the competition area. The rope will have three markings: one in the centre for measurement, and one on each of the two team sides of the rope, marking the point beyond which the members of the team may not go.

The maximum time for each contest is 6 minutes after which, if a team has not yet prevailed on the other to overstep the predefined mark to win, the rope must immediately be set on the ground, and the judges will measure which of the two teams is closer to the centre of the competition area by means of the rope’s central mark. The team that has succeeded in pulling the other team’s marker closer to the centre of the competition area will be declared the winner. The contests will take place in mini groups (the number in each mini group will be decided according to the total entries), where each of the teams in the mini group will compete with each other. The first-placed team in each mini group will advance to the next stage.

The procedure will be repeated until three teams remain. The three teams will compete with each other to determine first, second and third place. The draw for the teams in each mini group will be made immediately before the tug o’ war games begin. Mixed teams are permitted.

EACH TEAM IS PERMITTED A MAXIMUM OF ONE PROFESSIONAL TUG O’ WAR EXPONENT!!!

For this competition it is strictly prohibited to:

- drop the rope suddenly during the contest;

- pull the rope diagonally;

- go outside the prescribed competition area;

- move the rope once it has been laid on the ground for measurement

Failure to comply with these prohibitions will result in immediate disqualification.

(... The vigilant eyes of the judges will be watching you)
